Organic Chickens & Eggs go great together

Organic Chickens & Eggs go great together

April 29, 2013 by Liz Gardner

For many years we have purchased our organic, cage free eggs for our family from nearby chicken and egg farmer, Rockweld Farms. We enjoy being able to visit the farm locally and buy fresh eggs which are always of high quality and just extra tasty. Here’s a few facts about why their eggs are special.

What Does SPCA certified mean

  • The laying hens are cage free
  • Fed certified organic feed
  • Chickens are not given antibiotics
  • In Canada it is illegal to feed chickens growth hormones

Rockweld Farm

Here is a quote from two years ago from a CAP article “The Egg before the Chicken” on how Rockweld Farms clean their eggs :

Dry Clean Your Eggs

“Our newly purchased organic (non caged) eggs were not washed but sanded which is also called “dry cleaning” by using a loofah or sandpaper to clean the eggs!  Washing eggs (in water) evidently removes the protective “bloom” potentially allowing bacteria to enter the egg.  Unwashed eggs stay fresher longer.  Amazing what you find out when you go to “The Source”.

Organic Chicken

Rockweld Farms also grow chickens which are :

  • Medication free
  • Federally inspected
  • Air chilled

Here is a link to an article on why we choose to buy organic chicken ~ as well as lots of other chicken information including reasons on “Why the chicken crossed the road?”

Friendly owners of Rockweld Farms, Tim and Flo, are always happy to answer your questions on any of their products. Definitely not your everyday run-of-the-mill egg farmer – visit them at their farm store or at your local Farmers Market and mention “Liz recommended your terrific organic eggs”!

Notes

  • We love our organic eggs – in vegetarian frittatas, devilled, in wraps and even pickled
  • Rockweld sometimes have available what my Mum would call stew hens – these are great cooked in the pressure cooker to make delicious curries, satisfying soups and stews
  • Visit some of the local farms in the Valley on the Circle Farm Tour (self guided)

Thanks Tim & Flo & Rockweld Farms
for your generosity in supporting
