More than half of the world’s population lives in cities, and urban trees are critical to human health and well-being. Trees provide shade, mitigate floods, absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂), filter air pollution and provide habitats for birds, mammals and other plants.

Recently, with changes in many local community plans, private small acreages are being developed for high density homes. Even though trees are required to be planted to replace trees removed during development, forests and ecosystems take decades to regrow.
Hopefully, local and provincial councils will set aside natural and treed habitats for wildlife corridors for species to thrive including humans. Development in our cities and surrounding areas, may be unavoidable but conserving and maintaining of ecosystems for our grandchildren and those who follow should also be part of the plan.
