24 Living with Lung Cancer Health Tips

The question "what are some healthy lung cancer tips you live by" was on my Twitter feed this morning. My first thought was how aware you become of everything that pertains to Life when diagnosed with lung cancer and what can you do. I have been fortunate in that the lung cancer was discovered early and surgery was very swift with the cancer being "mildly" invasive.  My 4 year CT can results last month were "stable".  Hoping these ideas will help you deal with what is happening in your life and for you to become a healthier "You" - here we go:

When you are diagnosed with lung cancer

    Take charge of your Life

    1. Stop smoking - J'arrete de fumer
    2. Learn all you can about your disease and keep a log. It's a new language
    3. Ask what are your options: surgery, treatment, requirements
    4. Seek the best medical advice you can
    5. Make living your priority! You are unique and so is the cancer
    6. Lung cancer is not a disease you should stick your head in the sand about - no matter how unpleasant the news.

Does cancer cause fatigue and tiredness

    Quitting ...

    What's in it for me?

    Why should I stop smoking?

I want to regain control over myself  by getting rid of my tobacco addiction ...
I want to be at my best with my activities ...
I want to be healthier and have more energy ...

    Lifestyle Tips to consider

    1. Take some of the hints from earlier articles - cut out the chemicals in your life
    2. Keep busy, volunteer, take up a new hobby – whatever you are able
    3. Maintain a schedule as best you can
    4. During times of inactivity or inability, my passion for reading both fiction and non-fiction was a life saver and kept my mind occupied for weeks during treatments
    5. Maximize your energy for what you love to do. Go at your pace and do what works for you
    6. Faith is important.  Be cheerful. Strive to be happy -  from Life is Full of Surprises
    7. Basically, look after yourself the best you can – now

Diet Tips for a Healthier You

    1. Consume antioxidant fruits and vegetables every day for vitamins, minerals
    2. I drink fresh lemon juice every day
    3. My #1 vegetable juice - carrots, apples, garlic, turmeric and lemon juice. Add chemical-free kale and parsley from the garden.
    4. Make your food from scratch
    5. Immune System Boost - my version

    Exercise Tips to Try

    1. Exercise as much as you are able (this can be a tough one for many) – try for half an hour a day
    2. Swimming has always been my #1 form of exercise, though not always physically possible
    3. Walking is my second choice of exercise. Tips from Dr. Mike for us all.
    4. Check out exercise programs at your local Cancer Clinic and community centre

    Peace of Mind & Emotions

    • Emotionally and mentally, life can become a "roller coaster" ride with many ups and downs. Expect and prepare for them.
    • After the lung cancer surgery a 2nd medical opinion was sought on the cancer biopsy report. I was told to be ready for "palliative care" within 6 months. I was devastated ... but this report inspired me to fight and not give up hope and this is why I say to you ...

    Never Give Up!

    Notes:

    • Research and ask about the latest surgery and treatment for your type of lung cancer
    • For me, during treatments and appointments it was incredibly reassuring and comforting to have a hand to hold, a shoulder to cry on, a friend to be with me
    • Change of scenery. While awaiting results from a biopsy, it was good to go away for a holiday
    • Find what works for you and your family - accept help from family and friends. People love to lend a helping hand

    LIFE ...
    isn't about waiting
    for the storm to pass.
    It's about learning
    to dance in the rain

Since 2008 breast cancer surgery a lot has happened. These suggestions including exercise and diet helped me keep up a positive attitude. There is so much to add about my Journey such as the great advice and the wonderful support I have been given during these years.  Enjoy every moment of the day to the best of your ability - some days it can be overwhelming but keep a positive outlook as best you can. Hoping you have found some tips to make your life easier and encourage you. In closing here is Caramel and Parlsey's 200th article. Enjoy!  Keep searching for what gives you peace, hope and joy during this time of your life.
