Kids Can Cook

Kids Can Cook

October 29, 2021 by Liz Gardner Leave a Comment

Kids really can cook! This article was inspired by our 10 year old grandson, who on a recent visit, cooked us brekkie from scratch. What a pleasant surprise. This short article is a variety of his choice of a simple, nutritious breakfast, lunch or dinner for four of us. Truly take your pick of this almost “never ending” variety of menus with the imagination of a child and – have fun cooking up a storm with your kids … AND grandkids …

VARIATIONS ON KIDS THEME

As mentioned this simple “Kids Cooked” brekkie was a great base for conversations, ideas and other options for an easy healthy meal. Here’s some thoughts on options:

  1. Precooking some select veggies such as sliced mushrooms and onions
  2. Cooking up a full blown Quiche (no base) for dinner and great for leftovers. This was fun with more ideas than we could cook up! Such as vegetables (for the vegetarians) Add: Asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, parsley & other herbs, spinach, tomatoes, zucchini
  3. Salads galore with the addition of avocado, (cooked) asparagus spears and just about anything in #2. Tip: our grandkids enjoy chopped or sliced cucumber, carrots etc at just about every meal
  4. Other Scrambled Egg / wraps or Quiche options are : Egg & Bacon, fish (salmon / tuna) mince meat (chicken, beef, etc.), & always precooked “leftovers. All good ideas we thought

One More option = Frittata

This was an idea from his Mum, which is now Nana’s family favourite and another option for an easy, nutritious meal any time of day. Using combinations of your family’s favourite vegetables is a no brainer, especially when the kids can safely cook their own (and siblings) meals. Simply use the food you have on hand.

In Closing

A final note, for now, to all parents and caregivers, of any age … encourage your children to learn to cook for themselves and others and to help them make positive lifestyle choices when it comes to eating healthy food with long term benefits. Keep recipes simple, have fun and enjoy a shared meal.

We thoroughly appreciated this new, first time experience, especially as our grandson did such a great job and had fun himself. Our meal may not be new or exciting to many experienced chefs but the meal, and his attitude and laughter, were absolutely perfect for us all. THANK YOU

With tons of Love, always,

Nana
