Quite by chance while driving out to Chilliwack on a sunny Saturday we came across The Local Harvest, a new to us, farmers market, store and farm.  After visiting other farmers markets today we had to check this one out. We were pleasantly surprised at the variety of local food available for sale. Here's how to find them.

The Local Harvest farm market location

The farm, market and barn is easily accessible from Highway #1  heading towards Chilliwack or Hope, B.C. if you take the turnoff south on Lickman Road before Chilliwack city.  The farm and large store is visible from the road; easy to find and definitely worth a visit. After visiting the market if you continue south on Lickman Road you will eventually arrive at the Vedder River which is a great place to walk any time of the year.

    Local Harvest - Real Food

The Local Harvest market sells a wide variety of fresh produce some of which is grown on their own 30 acre farm and the rest is mostly locally sourced. Much of the produce is no-spray, chemical-free or organic and if not it is labelled as such. They also have an online store with a home delivery service for those living in the Chilliwack area.  A great idea if you are housebound or ill. The store sells other produce including cheeses and other dairy, meat, their own farm made bread and super pizza on site!

    Food Tasting & Fun

There was a separate area for food tasting, with samples of different pickles  as well as complimentary Gala apples which were crunchy, sweet and delicious. There was also a jam making competition and the youngest competitor was four and her jam was a real winner. She certainly deserves a blue ribbon.

The most delightful aromas wafting into the store came from the indoor Bistro restaurant serving breakfast and lunch. The Bistro was busy usually a sign of good food. There is also an Anita's Organic Mill  retail outlet selling their popular flours, nuts and grains. Overall there was  great  variety of different foods and produce as well as seasonal Fall produce with some odd-shaped pumpkins and brightly coloured squash.

    Take the Tour

Outside we were able to visit the distinctly patterned Muscovy ducks with their new batch of cuddly yellow ducklings. We did not realize that we could have taken an educational farm tour so will save that for when we return with our grandchildren.

We are so glad we took the time to check out the farm and local harvest store. Visit their website at the Local Harvest for a closer look and information on their values and ideas on sustainability, transparency and community.  If you are able it is a good idea to meet and ask questions of the farmer who grows and knows the produce you eat. It can be easier than you think  to eat fresh no-chemical-spray food which is good for you and your family. Simple and delicious.

    Note:

On our drive to Chilliwack we were pleased to see two Corn Barn sheds open for business selling famous Chilliwack corn.  They had a new supply of our favourite fresh Jubilee sweet corn so we bought our usual Bakers Dozen (13). Super tasty non-GMO Chilliwack Corn- what a treat for dinner!
