The Great Ocean Road is so "spectacular". I know I have written about this amazing world tourist destination quite a while ago (2013) but this year we introduced our grandchildren (and grown children) to this incredible ocean tour in Victoria, Australia. It's been more than five years since visiting my homeland and it truly was a "Trip of a Lifetime" ...
THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD - The Trip of a Lifetime
I have made this journey several times in my lifetime - during both summer and yes, a rainy winter. It is always amazingly spectacular and takes your breath away.
This year, we travelled in a roomy rental SUV on the "Road Trip". This not only gave us all lots of space but we could stop whenever we wanted to visit a special beach or take a photo of a majestic view or a family photo. We started our journey at Torquay (via Geelong) and ended a couple of days later at Warrnambool. There are many places to stop and stay overnight but our family choice was Lorne. This was a treat as we had a family suite downtown with an incredible ocean view. We all enjoyed ourselves and for me the Great Ocean Road, was pretty much the highlight of our month long visit with our family... besides visiting family & friends.
Rather large emus were wandering in the Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve
Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve
One of the places to visit near the "end or beginning" of the Great Ocean Road was the Tower Hill Wildlife Preserve near Warrnambool. This was a new experience for us all, and a good place to see 'unique to Australia' animals such as 'emus, kangaroos, koalas, swans, ducks and blue wrens'. These and many other wildlife live inside this 'magnificent dormant volcano' near the Great Ocean Road.
This was another incredible day visit to a rugged bushland reserve which was a fun place to go with kids and grandkids alike. A big plus also was that this was a good place to stop for a break, a relaxing walk, plus the emus were a big hit. It was definitely a highlight our grandkids really enjoyed.
On our way north to Ballarat we drove through the Otways. I am including this road sidetrip to continue your tour as it is such a dramatic change of scenery which included massive tree ferns. It is a refreshing and fascinating scenery change to some of the other differing countryside we had driven through previously. An opportunity you may not wish to miss. A favourite for us all.
Never tire of the amazing gums - Gippsland, Victoria
This was not meant to be a detailed expose of our road trip but more of a reminder of the beauty that still exists in our world. These destinations mentioned are easy to check out online. Enjoy every day of your trip if you decide to visit the 'Land Down Under'. This is only a small portion of the fabulous places we explored during our visit. We did not get to do all the things we thought we might - but it was certainly fun and a Trip of a Lifetime. Grateful for happy memories and safe travels.
Best wishes ~ Liz
